Short or long? Straight or curly? There’s more to choosing the right wig for you than deciding on the style. Here are a few questions to ask yourself before making your big wig purchase:
Is it made from human hair or synthetic?
A human hair wig has the most natural look, and withstands washing and heat-styling like natural hair. They can last several years but can also cost several thousand dollars.
Synthetic wigs on the other hand look quite authentic, require less maintenance and can be more affordable, with some starting at under $100. Worn every day, a synthetic wig can last from three to six months.
Is the cap size right?
To achieve that natural look, it’s important to fit your wig to your head. While the average wig tends to fit about 95% of people, wigs also come in petite and large sizes. Some even feature adjustable straps for a more comfortable, secure fit.

Does it feature a wefted or monofilament cap?
Wefted caps (aka. standard caps, capless wigs and thin-wefted) feature strips of lace which the wefts – the strings of fiber which make up the “hair” of the wig – are attached to. Modern designs are lighter and cooler to wear, with higher end wefted cap wigs featuring a lace section at the crown allowing the wearing to part the wig to either side, and brush the hair in any direction.
Monofilament caps (aka. mono tops, hand-tied and medical wigs) utilize a fine mesh that allows the color of the scalp to show through. It is also breathable, and the most gentle on the scalp. Monofilament caps were originally created with women suffering significant hair loss from chemotherapy and alopecia. They offer a look that is more natural and versatile than wefted designs, though the price point is higher due to the superior construction of the wig.
Does the style of the wig suit the shape of your face?
Wigs come in all shapes and sizes, but as with any haircut, not all wigs will be suited to the shape of your face. An oval shaped face can wear just about any style of wig. Longer wigs with layers look great on square shaped faces, while curly styles are perfect if you have an oblong shaped face. If you have a heart shaped face, a chin length wig is the best way to go.
Do the colors match yours?
For the most authentic look, match your wig color to your natural hair, skin tone, and eye colour. Taking the time to try out different colors and shades before you buy will pay off in the long run. Use your eyebrows as a guide to choose a color that suits your skin tone.
